TWO SUPERB PROGRAMMES TO TAKE YOU BACK TO 1979!

It's 1979 and politically Britain ends the decade as it started with economic, political and industrial turmoil and a change of government. Margaret Thatcher and the Conservatives are elected to power, while in Iran, their is an Islamic Revolution and the Shah is exiled. In the north east of England, listeners were kept fully informed by Metro's newsoom.

As the seventies gave way to the eighties, the north east, Britain and indeed the world were changing dramatically. It was one of history's turning points.

In the United Kingdom, the Winter of Discontent marked by industrial unrest gave way to a new government in the spring led by Margaret Thatcher with new economics based on the free market and deregulation. There was a religious revolution in Iran where the Shah was deposed and uncertainties in the Middle East led to a second major global oil price shock. In southern Africa the winds of change and a bush war led to the crumbling of illegal white minority rule in one of Britain's few remaining colonies, Rhodesia. The country would become Zimbabwe in 1980, the Prime Minister Ian Smith being replaced with a new president, Robert Mugabe in democratic elections. Pressure was intensified on the Apartheid regime in South Africa and the civil war flared again in the Lebanon, with its capital, Beirut crumbling.

Presenter of the Mid Day Music Explosion, Metro Radio's
Steve King.
It's time for another trip back in in the musical time machine and another excerpt from the daily Mid Day Music Explosion presented by Steve King, a fantastic one hour mix of oldies and their statistics and chart positions. The oldies are mainly from the sixties and early seventies and the show is a great mixture of blockbuster oldies along with a sprinkling of singles that you haven't heard for some time. This excerpt is from August, 1977.

The Mid Day Music Explosion was followed by fifteen minutes of Metro News, Weather and Sport at 1pm, presented either by one Metro Radio's journalists, one of its presenters or one of Tyne Tees Television's in-vision continuity announcers from City Road in Newcastle such as Neville Wanless who also worked for Metro Radio.

Steve's programme continued at 1.15pm with more contemporary hits and a guest depending on the day of the week. These included Denise Robertson, Metro Radio's "agony aunt" helping listeners with relationship and personal problems, and the station's astrologist Joan Porter with her horoscope predictions.

So relax, settle back and let us take you on another nostalgic trip back to the early days of Independent Local Radio (ILR) in north east England, courtesy of Neil Siddaway of Middlesbrough. Thanks Neil!

The Mid Day Music Explosion, (excerpt) presented by Steve King. Air date: August, 1977. Duration: 17 minutes.

ByANDY FLEMING

Time for another fix of nostalgia and a journey back through the decades to listen to Metro Radio in the late seventies, specifically to a time when the movie Grease had been released at the cinemas. Once again we are indebted to Neil Siddaway of Middlesbrough for these absolutely fantastic recordings. I'm sure Neil that I am not the only one who can a spend a happy couple of ours relaxing and reminiscing whilst listening to your superb archive.

Steve King, presenter of the
weekday programme, the

It's five minutes past twelve on Friday June 23, 1978, and musically John Travolta and Olivia Newton John were riding high at number one in the UK charts with a single spin-off from Grease. Picture the scene; you're in the kitchen making a few sandwiches and your transistor radio is tuned to Metro Radio on 261. It's time for the daily Mid Day Music Explosion presented by Steve King, a fantastic one hour mix of oldies and their statistics and chart positions.
